Common Injuries in Golf
With the swift, repetitive motions that golf requires, the body is put under quite a bit of stress that can lead to injury. These are the most common injuries that we see in golfers:
• Spine
- Disc and stress fractures from bending and twisting past your available range of motion in spine and hips
- Sciatic issues with referred pain from nerve entrapment
- Segmental dysfunction (feeling ‘stuck’) from muscles that are too tight, preventing individual level motion
- Acute muscle strain- over-swinging, hitting the ground, topping the ball and jarring, etc.
- Posture-based pain, often upper back and between shoulder blades, from forward lean, lack of properly conditioned muscles
- Lack of abdominal support for spine, rotation, posture and more
• Knees
- Meniscus issues from lack of proper body weight transition, front to back leg, and during swing
- Pain from arthritis from outside of golf, effecting swing and weight shifting
- IT Band (ITB) pain from hip tightness, lack of muscle balance, standing and walking gait and more
• Hips
- Gluteal and hip rotator pain from swinging too hard, excessive walking, improper weight transfer
- Bursitis from swing and standing/walking
• Foot and Ankle
- Shin splints from standing and walking on uneven surfaces
- Plantar fascia issues from stand/walk, lack of arch support in shoes
- Calf muscle pain from overuse (too many rounds too soon in season or too close together, increased steps/walking)
- Ankle sprains, often from the uneven surfaces of the course, fatigue of supportive muscles
• Shoulders
- Rotator cuff stress from overswinging
- Lack of flexibility leading to stress and strain at both ends of swing
• Elbow and Wrist
- Overgripping pain- irritation in the wrist flexors or even “tenodesis” muscles (grip with wrist extension)
- Strain on distal wrist joint from positioning, grip, overuse
- Elbow issues, lateral or medial, from grip and swing
